July 23: Forum on the Muslim Ban

TPM’s next general meeting will be a Public Forum on Sunday, July 233:00-5:00 pm at Piney Branch Elementary School to address the political and legal implications of the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Trump Administration’s Muslim (travel) ban. The distinguished speakers are Jocelyn Dyer, senior attorney at Human Rights First, and Kiyanoush Razaghi, staff attorney at Defending Vulnerable Populations Project of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. and Joyce Williams, United Community Ministries Progreso.

The forum is being convened by the TPM Muslim Solidarity Subcommittee, which works on education, outreach, and advocacy on issues that impact the well-being, safety, and civil rights of Muslims in our community and nationally.

The Sanctuary Movement Subcommittee:

Let’s highlight another Immigration subcommittee. The Sanctuary Movement Subcommittee has been working with area congregations to support immigrants at risk of deportation. There are 31 congregations participating in the Montgomery County network to date, and we are working to expand that list. We focus on 4 areas: training to meet rapid response, accompaniment, and know your rights needs; direct support; physical hosting of immigrants at risk; and being ally congregations to those physically hosting. This work is done in partnership with the DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network, CASA, and ACLU as well as county and other partners. Contact the Sanctuary subcommittee leads at

The subcommittees meets every other Monday, 6:45 pm, at Historic Takoma, alternating with full Immigration Committee meetings.

TPM’s Spokes Council + Strategic Planning + Women’s Action

TPM’s governing Spokes Council will meet next on Thursday July 207-9 pm at Historic Takoma.

And TPM will convene a second strategic planning session at Historic Takoma on Sunday July 23, 9 am to 1 pm.

TPM’s Women’s March committee did wonderful work toward the February Women’s March – the march is ancient history – and we’re now reconstituting Takoma Park Mobilization Women’s Action. Interested? Step one is to join the Google group – visit!forum/TPMwomen – and then stay tuned.

Stay mobilized!

Attend bystander intervention training on Tuesday, July 25, 7-9pm. Cohosted by SURJ, SSSNA, IMPACT Silver Spring, and the MCCRC, at the Silver Spring Civic Building, Ellsworth Room. Space is limited to 80. Please RSVP here:
